Support to restart educational activities in CAR

The project “Support to restart educational activities in the Central African Republic (CAR) via the accelerated funding of the Global Partnership for Education – GPE” was implemented in the provinces of Ombella M’Poko and Ouham Pende from June 2014 to May 2015. The project supported the reopening of schools and the targeted learners’ return to formal schooling through school rehabilitation and pedagogical support, such as catch-up classes and distribution of school kits. The local education authorities were also supported in enhancing the monitoring of teachers’ presence. The project reached over 18,000 children aged 6 to 12 years in around 43 schools in the two targeted provinces, and involved more than 250 teachers in the catch-up classes.

FCA implemented the project and was responsible for the rehabilitation component, distribution of the catch-up classes´ materials and the school kits, payment of teachers, monitoring and data collection of the catch-up classes. The project was closely coordinated with UNICEF, the Ministry of Education and the UN Education Cluster to ensure that the project objectives and activities addressed the priorities identified in the most recent UN Education Strategic Plan.

Main outcomes:

• 19 schools rehabilitated at the end of the Project.
• 10,151 learners took part in catch up classes.
• Over 27,000 persons were sensitised on the importance of schooling and on community mobilisation.
• Distribution of school kits and back bags for 17,255 learners and 289 teachers.
• 72 members of the PTAs and 7 school directors participated in 4 different sensitisations on the management of project outputs, such as rehabilitated schools, community mobilisation and reopening of schools.
